Texas Children's Health Plan: Why safety net programs matter

The results of an eight year study sponsored by Texas Children's Hospital and Texas Children's Health Plan found that, overall, children's health coverage dropped during the recession, but enrollment in the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Medicaid for children in Houston and its surrounding 12 counties doubled. These results demonstrate the need that the Houston community has, especially in times of economic uncertainty, for safety net programs like CHIP and Medicaid which help keep children and the entire community healthy.

AUSTIN – Eligible Texas women on Medicaid can go straight to their pharmacist to pick up mosquito repellent, Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Charles Smith announced today. Texas Medicaid has issued a standing order for mosquito repellent prescriptions for women who are between the ages of 10 and 45 or pregnant.

Texas Medicaid now covers certain mosquito repellent products as a Medicaid benefit for the prevention of Zika virus. Zika can cause severe birth defects in unborn children whose mothers are infected while pregnant. Because there is not a vaccine to prevent the disease or medicine to treat it, it is important for women to use repellent to protect themselves and unborn babies.

HHSC's Healthy Texas Women Program Launches Enhanced Postpartum Care Services

AUSTIN – The Texas Health and Human Services Commission announced today the launch of an enhanced postpartum care services package for eligible women enrolled in Healthy Texas Women, called HTW Plus. Beginning September 1, approximately 90,000 Healthy Texas Women clients will automatically receive this new postpartum care coverage for up to 12 months.
